REX Barron (Mattrex)'s Art Gallery

Wonder what else I could've done in 13 hours =P

This isn't my first drawing of Mattrex, but it's my best. Looking at this piece again, however, I see some glaring flaws, such as the lack of designs to match that on his abdomen on his arms. In case it's hard to make out the title, that book he's reading is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, a personal favorite of mine.

My Critical Mass character, Remington Everard Xerxes "REX" Barron in his human form. Surrounding him are his name in katakana (nickname on the right side of the picture, full name on the left) and his signature, which I may end up using as a watermark.

I don't like this background all that much, to be honest. What's more, I realize his face looks very off in terms of shape. I'd have to say I've done much better with more recent drawings of him (this was originally penciled in February 2008).

Click on the picture to see the real thing; the closeup shown is just a placeholder.

Sometimes the imagination just gets a bit ahead of the facts… I've worked hard to build up the image that REX sees himself as a king or worthy of becoming royalty, but I had never actually depicted him as a king yet. So, without further ado, I give you a drawing of the royal jerk donning the crown, cape and scepter as he stands above the mouth of a volcano.

I think it looks pretty good, but I apologize if it takes too long to load or some other size-related problems. I was just pretty interested in giving him a real mighty, supercilious look and I think that the full picture reflects that nicely.

A gift drawing of Dark Necrobat for Regulus's 20th birthday. I tried to be a little more detailed than usual on the background, but something about the balcony looks funny to me (besides the fact that it's ruined XD). Other than that, I hope the pose is okay; I don't think I foreshortened the left arm properly, though.

Likewise, I drew Volt Kraken for Zymeth's birthday. I couldn't decide between two backgrounds for the picture, but the one shown here is the one Zy himself prefers.

Here's a drawing of an original supporting character I created for Critical Mass back in February 2008. Her name is Tracii; she serves as navigator for the Critical Masters when they go on their missions. She had originally worked for the Maverick Hunters but, feeling that she was not helping them in any way, she quit and worked on her own before being found and taken in by Critical Mass.

You might notice her left hand appears to be holding something. I had originally intended for her to be a mechanic for the team and drew her holding a wrench; when Enigma applied with the character of Dr. Zap, I realized that such a role was then taken, so she was recast with the navigational responsibility typical for female Reploids in the X series.

Thinking about it, her design is sort of a combination between those of Dynamo and Alia, her pose is based loosely on that of Douglas in his official picture in the Mega Man X5 manual, and the background comes from the stage select screen in-game (making up backgrounds is not my strong suit ^^; and it really shows).

I felt that I should try my hand at spriting REX in 32-bit format. Tom Dubius and Aaron Boreal from Mega Man Star Force served as great bases for the body and clothes, especially in the second sprite, while Pharaoh Man from Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters and Mr. Match from Mega Man Battle Network 2 were all the outside sources I needed in order to obtain the necessary extra colors.

At first, every time I sprited a new outfit for him, REX kept looking more and more like a Goth.  That wasn't my original intention at all, but I decided to roll with it, creating the fourth and fifth sprites, which also sport a different angle for the face and longer hair.

Well, since Regulus modified the sprite for Dark Necrobat, I figured that someone ought to make a new sprite for Volt Kraken's new look, and the above sprite is my try at it. I think I did well with the colors becoming paler and adding in the hair; my main problems were where the design actually changed or with the eyes. I wanted to show that the pupils are white without erasing the irises, but the whole eye didn't actually fit all that well in my opinion.

The scientist who appears briefly in Act Three.

This was my third try at drawing Dynamo, and the only one I've colored. I think he looks less effeminate than he did in the two tries I made before— although, granted, that was actually what I was going for then. I mean, he has rather long hair, in the game sprite, he has his fist against his hip and, on Critical Mass, he is portrayed as homosexual. I honestly like this pose better then in the earlier pics, though (not uploading those two though, so nyeh), and I think the proportions look better here too.

About time I uploaded some art of the members of my favorite band! This drawing of Slash (the most epic rock guitarist EVAR) one of the few Western-style drawings I've done lately, and I really like it personally. I don't think I'll be coloring this, or at least not on Photoshop.

The top hat was a little tough for me because I didn't have enough references for the design on it. The reason I chose to do a close-up rather than a full body shot was that I could avoid putting in any of the tattoos~

Well, I've mentioned time and time again that REX Barron is able to switch between his original human form and his form as Mattrex. However, I've never before uploaded any art of him in the middle of the transformation, so here's a little sample.

This is more or less right at the beginning of the transformation from REX to Mattrex, and REX sometimes us this first step as a threat or a scare tactic. I've always tried to emphasize the unusual brilliance of REX's green eyes, and since I felt they didn't stick out enough even with the brightest green possible being used, I used a new, partially transparent layer on top and airbrushed the color over the eyes to give them more of a glow quality.

I might make a bit of a short animation out of this eventually; I'm only partially done with it currently, though.

One of my personal sayings expressed in a Mega Man X5 screenshot with a caption.
I was feeling particularly snarky one day and decided I wanted to caption a horrid MegaMan.EXE-Sonic fusion I found on deviantART for a topic on REX's Rages dealing in part with game series that don't mix. That never happened, but for all I care you guys can still rag on the artist for her abomination. She goes by Shanna-The-Hedgehog if you want to attack her on her own turf. ^_~
My first attempt at drawing the Skiver, not intended to embody Marcus's personality but just to depict the Reploid. I like how it came out... Well, except the wings. I think they look off somehow, but I thought I had the proportions down... maybe it's just because you can't the entire wing span, or because they're spread even though he's standing on solid ground... Let's just say he just landed and has yet to fold his wings. Otherwise I think I did very well, especially with such design details as the belt, mohawk and shoes. The platform the Skiver is standing was made completely in Photoshop, and I think it's better than most of the rushed backgrounds I put in..
A gift desktop for DarkMegamanX, better known as Axle the Red. Included are those recurring Reploids and another soon-to-appear opponent... More details will come later.
One of the Guns N' Roses band member sprites Zymeth and I split up duties on for our sixth epilogue. For those not in-the-know, this is lead guitarist Slash, who's my favorite member of the band.
Besides Slash, I also sprited the two best-known drummers of the band, who sort of work shifts with the band according to the epilogues. This is Steven Adler, GnR's first drummer.
And now, the second drummer, Matt Sorum. I think the proportions were a bit weaker because I didn't shrink down the obvious-base legs, but then again, Matt is one of the biggest members of the band.
